چکیده

We have proposed that the cosmic ray spectrum “knee”, the steepening of the cosmic ray spectrum at energy E > ∼ 1015.5 eV, is due to “new physics”, namely new interactions at TeV cm energies which produce particles undetected by the experimental apparatus. In this letter we examine specifically the possibility that this interaction is low scale gravity. We consider that the graviton propagates, besides the usual four dimensions, into an additional δ, compactified, large dimensions and we estimate the graviton production in p p collisions in the high energy approximation where graviton emission is factorized. We find that the cross section for graviton production rises as fast as ( √ s/Mf )2+δ, where Mf is the fundamental scale of gravity in 4 + δ dimensions, and that the distribution of radiating a fraction y of the initial particle’s energy into gravitational energy (which goes undetected) behaves as δyδ−1. The missing energy leads to an underestimate of the true energy and generates a break in the inferred cosmic ray spectrum (the “knee”). By fitting the cosmic ray spectrum data we deduce that the favorite values for the parameters of the theory are Mf ∼ 8 TeV and δ = 4.

Gravitational Radiation from Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays in Models with Large Extra Dimensions

The effects of classical gravitational radiation in models with large extra dimensions are investigated for ultra high energy cosmic rays (CRs). The cross sections are implemented into a simulation package (SENECA) for high energy hadron induced CR air showers. We predict that gravitational radiation from quasi-elastic scattering could be observed at incident CR energies above 109 GeV for a set...

Collider Phenomenology with Split-UED

We investigate the collider implications of Split Universal Extra Dimensions. The non-vanishing fermion mass in the bulk, which is consistent with the KK-parity, largely modifies the phenomenology of Minimal Universal Exta Dimensions. We scrutinize the behavior of couplings and study the discovery reach of the Tevatron and the LHC for level-2 Kaluza-Klein modes in the dilepton channel, which wo...

Neutrinos as Source of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays in Extra Dimensions

If the neutrinos are to be identified with the primary source of ultra-high energy cosmic rays(UHECR), their interaction on relic neutrinos is of great importance in understanding their long intergalactic journey. In theories with large compact dimensions, the exchange of a tower of massive spin-2 gravitons (Kaluza-Klein excitations) gives extra contribution to νν̄ −→ ff̄ and γγ processes along w...

Geomagnetic Field Eect over Azimuth Anisotropy of Cosmic Rays via Study of Primary Particles

Geomagnetic field is a one of the candidates for creation of anisotropy in azimuth distribution of extensive air showers over the entered cosmic rays to the atmosphere. Here we present the question: Is there any azimuth anisotropy flux in the upper level of the atmosphere due to the geomagnetic field over the entered cosmic-rays? The obtained answer is: yes. This investigation showed an agreeme...

Searching for Extra Dimensions in High Energy Cosmic Rays

We present a study of the decay of an intermediate mini black hole at the first impact of a cosmic ray particle with the atmosphere, in the context of D-brane world scenarios with TeV scale gravity and large extra dimensions. We model the decay of the black hole using the semiclassical approximation and include the corrections coming from energy loss into the bulk. Extensive simulations show th...
